What's hidden behind the trap door?
So the family story we've both heard is that Judge James Moore Wayne, Mayor of Savannah and Supreme Court Justice appointed by Pres. Andrew Jackson, had 3 black children--in addition to his white ones. His black mistress? concubine? (words do fail when describing these sexual relationships between slave and master) was reportedly named Nancy. Amy is descended from the Judge and Nancy's child, Elizabeth. The Judge's sister was my great-great-great-grandmother. Which makes Amy and I 5th cousins once removed, or something like that. The Judge's black children were raised as his own and taught to read, but the story goes that their books were hidden behind a trap door. At least that's what we've heard...... I hope to find out more in Savannah by visiting the Ga. Historical Society and the sites devoted to African American history in Savannah.

Amy helped me create a blog
I discovered that I have a distant cousin--she's black and I'm white--a couple of years ago. Amy and I are now researching the story of the Trap Door in Savannah, GA, and our mutual family history. I leave for Savannah on Saturday......
